Highly motivated individuals don’t just wake up one morning and find themselves magically transformed overnight. Remaining committed to your pursuits takes effort and determination over an extended period of time. If you want to hone your processes in order to become a master of motivation, following are the five skills you should work on continually:

Focus

Remaining focused is absolutely crucial. Anything that derails you from your pursuits is tantamount to a hurdle in the path of a marathon racer. The faster you snap your attention back to your initial endeavor, the more likely you are to achieve your goal.

Goals

While we’re on the subject of goals, it is imperative you clearly define your goals. Motivated individuals set specific targets, monitor their milestones, and track successes/failures on an ongoing basis. Without acknowledged goals in place, how can you measure your movements?

Diet

Another factor top performers have in common is their commitment to a healthy diet. No, this doesn’t have to mean only drinking green shakes or nibbling on carrots throughout your day (although both are excellent sources of nutrients). An adherence to a diet of quality foods and beverages will fuel your performance both literally and figuratively. Individuals who are mindful of the things they put in their body are much likelier to succeed when compared to those who survive on processed foods and sugary drinks.

Exercise

Although you may not want to hear it, exercise is a critical component of success. Focusing on fitness will help you stay motivated as you pursue your goals. You needn’t spend every waking hour at the gym, but a defined plan to remain physically fit goes hand in glove (workout glove, that is) with optimal performance.

Hard Work

A fifth characteristic highly motivated individuals have in common is their willingness to work hard to achieve their goals. They don’t expect handouts and know their successes will be determined by their own ‘nose to the grindstone’ attitude and dogged pursuit of excellence. Slackers and malcontents rarely make it to the winner’s circle; only those who push themselves through hard work are likely to achieve their dreams.

Remaining highly motivated is a skill that takes time to hone. It won’t happen overnight and it won’t be easy, but the results are definitely worth the effort.
